What do Americans know about Europe?

i had a lot of fun reading the topic about english spelling and i asked the above question already under that topic, but i think a it's interesting enough to create a new topic.. for instance:.

a) what is the capital city of denmark?.

b) what is the difference between holland and the netherlands.

Oh geez, isn't the Netherlands the political name of the country including all territory while Holland is the name of the home country? Something like that, right?

c) How old is Belgium

Don't know exactly. I don't think it's that old. Wasn't it was created as a buffer state between France and Holland because of religious wars? I seem to remember an ongoing dispute about what language to say Mass in. So I'm going to guess 300 years.

d) Which european countries are a kingdom and which of them are an United Kingdom?

Well I'm not sure if you're including the U.K. (Britain) in this, but I'll throw out Sweden, Monaco Denmark as kingdoms and the Netherlands and Britain as united kingdom. Does Vatican City count as a kingdom, or a papal territory?

The media exists to instill fear in readers or viewers. This is done to increase readership or ratings. The media is not there to tell you "the truth" (sounds familiar), they are there for their own self-interest.

I had the original swine flu in 1976. I survived just fine. My "loving" parents did not take me to the doctor, I had no medication whatsoever. Yeah it was a pretty bad illness, I missed 3 weeks of school, but geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez, this is nothing like the Spanish Influenza of 1919.

Let's just tap the brakes okay?

Employer just made more layoffs

it sucks.

lots of very talented people were just laid off at the company i work for.

lots of technology (software development) jobs going over seas.. i distinctly recall a meeting where leadership said, with a straight face, that jobs were not going to be sent overseas.

I was laid off in March. Nearly 6 months later I found a job.

My old firm had an operating profit of $100 million and yet laid off over 100 employees. They said they were "positioning the firm for the future". Bullshit. That said nothing about the millions being paid out in bonuses to the execs.

Just curious -- what's the difference between Roman Polanski and Alex Kelly? Kelly was not famous, fled to Europe to avoid rape charges and was villified on serveral news programs for fleeing.

Why should Polanski be treated and thought of any differently?

Alex Kelly was charged with committing two rapes in Darien, Connecticut, in 1986. Before his trial was due to begin in 1987, Kelly fled the United States and spent the next seven years on the run, mostly in Europe. [1] Kelly's parents allegedly financed him during this seven-year period, although they may have been unaware of his exact locations. Law-enforcement authorities suspected this was the case and, on at least one occasion, raided the parents' house in an attempt to find evidence of Kelly's location or their assistance to him. No legal action, however, was taken against them. [2] Because Kelly was on the run in Europe, he missed the funeral when his older brother died.

In 1995, Kelly surrendered to authorities in Switzerland just as his passport was about to expire. He was extradited to the United States in order to stand trial on rape and kidnapping charges. Several lesser counts were excluded, as they were not specifically listed in the extradition treaty between the two nations. [3] Kelly faced two trials in 1997. After the first was declared a mistrial, the second resulted in his conviction for the first rape and a sentence of 16 years in prison. [4] He pleaded no contest to the second rape. [5]

Grandmother Goes To Jail For Buying Cold Medicine!

in indiana, a grandma bought cold medicine for her husband.

within a 7 day period, the same woman bought her adult daughter a similar cold relief medicine.

evidently, there's a law there saying you can't buy more than 3 grams of these meds within a 7 day period.

Any WINE buffs on here ?

i am not an expert on wine, can't afford to be, but i do like a good one,preferably red, but i have tasted some excellent rose and white.. my question is for the benefit of my sister in law, she is a chain smoker, and perhaps for that reason cannot abide a wine that is even slightly dry, she only drinks white,but does not enjoy the sweet white she has bought (cheapo bottles) so sticks lemonade in medium or dry white.. that is o.k if she is paying, but i often buy a good quality white, around $20 , and she desecrates it by pouring in the lemonade !.

can anyone recommend a wine,not too expensive,that she would enjoy ?

i suppose for her strange palate it would have to be "sweet" , but she hates sickly sweet.

Well if she wants to ruin wine by putting lemonade in it, I don't know if it matters.

But a solid little house white wine is a Cavit pinot grigio. An Italian wine, it's light, a bit fruity and refreshing in the summer. Alice White chardonnay is a little heavier, most chardonnays are; good aftertaste, but not overpowering like many chardonnays. And it's an Australian wine, and I'm not partial to them. Both should be under $10 a bottle.

i saw it years ago and absolutely howled at it.. the way it takes the piss out of the religious leaders, the newly turned christians, and has a cheeky stab at the romans and pontius pilate is great.. seeing the funny side of what so many people take so seriously, for me is a breath of fresh air.. .

This is the second time I've read the Huffington Post and the second time I've been amazed at how stupid the writer's position is.

I don't know, maybe I'm just a dumb American guilty of backseat justice but he was tried and convicted of drugging and raping a 13 year old girl. I don't know how being a brilliant film director absolves him of a hideous crime.

I have never defended any of them and I have never said any of them shouldn't have been locked up or paroled.

Yeah but see here's the thing -- how can anyone recreate with any accuracy the insanity that happened that night? But if you want to talk about Atkins, she wa there when Gary Hinman was murdered. Granted she didn't kill him, but I don't believe her when she said she didn't know what was going to happen. Manson was seriously pissed at Hinman, only a moron or someone deep in denial wouldn't know.

It was Kasabian who refused to murder, after the Libianca murders Manson told her to kill that guy (sorry I've got Alzheimers) and she stalled it out long enough to where she didn't have to do it.

I don't see where Atkins behaved that way. I see Atkins totally embracing the whole thing. I mean good god writing with a dead woman's blood is beyond gruesome. And wasn't she the one who, when Sharon Tate pleaded for the life of her unborn baby, responded "I don't have any pity on you bitch." That's not someone caught up in the moment. That's someone who's enjoying what's happening.

I don't as far as motivation, does it really matter whether it was Helter Skelter or Manson just being Hannibal Lecter-like insane? He ordered the murders and his followers joyfully carried them out.
